Curatorial practice

Dance film is a cross disciplinary art form that intersects dance/choreography, film and visual arts – sometimes leaning more towards one or the other but always with movement at is core.

When movement is the starting point, the work speaks to my body and my senses before my analytical mind. Here there is a potential to tell a story in a different way, that can challenge the masculine, linear dramaturgy we have grown up with from Hollywood.
It challenges me as a viewer, and it is challenging as a maker as well.

When I curate a program I look for films that can move me in new directions. I watch the films over and over again and through this practice I have come to discover that many of my favorite films are working with a non-logical dramaturgy. Every time I watch them the editing feels different and I experience something new. This opens up the film from being a linear experience to a universe that I enter. This discovery is intriguing to me.

Diversity is an important factor to me as well. Both in terms of the artistic expression and the artists behind the films. Unlike popular believes in the dance world, I don’t think dance is a universal language, where we can understand each other across borders and cultures, but I think by setting a clear frame for the curated dance film programs, there is a potential for starting a conversation.
