NUDE

A woman is sliding down the windowsill in the hallway. By the end of the hallway there is a door. Behind the door there is a hallway. By the end of the hallway there is a woman. Behind the woman there is a door. Behind the door there is a hallway. By the end of the hallway there is a woman sliding down the windowsill.

NUDE was filmed in a residential building in Brooklyn, New York in October 2006 and presented as Maia’s graduation project at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in January 2007 and later at venues in New York and Copenhagen.

My mission was to work with the space (or in reality lack of space) and to find the point where dance and film meet.  In the end neither media dominates the final picture.

NUDE represses dramatic expression to a subtle surface of bodies, fabric, faces and walls all in one color. Feelings emerge through the sound of female voices and as through openings of the female dancers’ bodies. The soft shapes of human bodies stand in direct contrast to the squared hard edges of the hallway. The colors blend to one, nude color. Nothing or no one can stand out from the whole picture except for the red exit signs, that lead no where. The doors are closed. One opens in a split second only to be closed again. It is a static moment, a dream from which you can not wake. This contrasts contrary to the function of a hallway, a transitional space. What happens when one feels stuck in transition?
